Some things you can pay for directly.
You’re Not Uninsured, You’re Self Insured
Health insurance is a financial instrument, not a health instrument. Without it, you are at risk of going bankrupt, but you shouldn’t be a risk of bad health. The cost of seeing a doctor many times, or even handling most emergencies, should be less than a year’s worth of premiums for people who make just a bit too much to qualify for help. People should think of health insurance a bit more like life insurance–most of the time you are fine without it unless something truly awful happens, then it protects your family from bankruptcy.
